Looking for a Gym? Start by Asking Someone Who Actually Loves Theirs

  • July 15, 2025

Most people search for a new gym by comparing prices and equipment, but a better approach is to talk to someone they know who genuinely enjoys working out. The key to finding a place that sticks often comes from real conversations with regular people who have already found something that works. Their experiences can point you toward the kind of community and support that no sales pitch can offer.

Finding a new gym usually means staring at the websites of nearby gyms, comparing prices and amenities or scrolling through social media. What if next time you tried something different? Instead of hunting for the lowest price or the fanciest machines, start by looking at the people you already know who absolutely love working out! Not lifelong athletes but friends, neighbors and coworkers who show up week after week not because they are super disciplined or gifted but because they genuinely enjoy what they’re doing. By talking with them about what they do and why they love it you will discover the real criteria that will lead you to a place you actually stick with.

Think of someone in your life who lights up when they mention their workout. Maybe it is the unassuming neighbor who randomly tried jiu jitsu with a friend and now has been there for over a year. Or maybe a coworker signed up at CrossFit to get in shape and lose weight but mostly talks about the music and the energy of the group. They're not broadcasting every rep on social media nor have they turned into the evangelical type. They simply found something that sparks joy. Strike up a conversation and ask them to walk you through a typical class. Listen closely to the moments that made them fall in love with their newfound fitness craft.

Their stories will reveal the real search parameters you should be using. You might hear about how surprised they were when the instructor remembered their name or how coaches helped them work around their limitations. These insights are far more valuable than social media images or promotional gimmicks. They point to the atmosphere and coaching style that will make a gym feel like a place where you belong and show how a tight knit community of regulars is what turns a free trial class into a long term habit.

Once you have gathered these insights, use them to guide your next gym search. Look for independently owned gyms or martial arts schools where the people you meet mirror your friend’s enthusiasm. Notice whether coaches check in on you. Observe how members interact with each other. These real world clues will paint a better picture of what it looks and feels like to be part of something impactful.

At Gym Force not only do many of our members become friends but many of them start out that way as well. Our gym communities grow significantly through referrals of close friends and even relatives who see the changes firsthand and decide to join in on the fun.

Next time you think about making a change and cannot see yourself running every morning and you have already tried the ten dollar a month place, skip the generic search filters and go straight to the people who already love what they do. Ask what they do and why they love it. Then find a place that offers the same spark. You might just discover that the next front door you walk through is the one you never want to leave.
